Twins in the first months: realistic organization
Practical guide to the first months with twins: feeding, safe sleep, shifts, checks, outings and support without rigid promises.

With two newborns, the aim is not perfection. It is a system simple enough to survive short nights.
Start with essentials
Twins can have different weights, hunger, rhythm and skills. Avoid strict comparisons. One may latch better, one may sleep less, one may need more checks.
Watch:
- feeding for each baby;
- wet diapers and stools;
- weight according to pediatric advice;
- temperature and color;
- sleep on a safe surface;
- appointments and prescribed treatments.
Track without obsessing
With two babies it is easy to forget who fed, who had medicine or who had a wet diaper. A notebook, whiteboard or app can be enough.
Record:
- baby initials;
- time and type of feed;
- diaper;
- prescribed medicines or vitamins;
- signs to report.
Adult shifts
If there are two adults, both do not need to be awake all night. Use responsibility blocks: the sleeping adult really sleeps, the on-duty adult handles feeding, changing and settling.
If you are alone for long stretches, prepare safe stations: two safe places to put babies down, water, snacks, diapers, charged phone and useful numbers.
Safe sleep
Safe sleep comes before convenience. Each baby should sleep on their back, on a firm clear surface, with no pillows, bumpers, toys or soft bedding. For cot sharing questions, follow your local health guidance and pediatrician's advice.

Leaving the house
Early outings should be easy to stop. Choose short routes, realistic timing and a bag divided by baby.
Bring:
- separate changes of clothes;
- plenty of diapers;
- milk or breastfeeding supports if needed;
- bags;
- light blankets;
- health documents if advised.
Accept help
With twins, useful help is often logistical: meals, shopping, older siblings, laundry and rides. Do not wait until you are at breaking point.
