Within 3 Days of Birth (at the Hospital)

Birth declaration at the hospital registry office★The father or an authorized person can usually do it
Choose the baby's name★It becomes final when the declaration is filed
Check that the hospital sends the declaration to the municipalityMany hospitals do this automatically

Within the First 10 Days

Italian tax code (codice fiscale)★Request it through the Revenue Agency, online or in office, or through the municipality
Add the baby to the local health authority (ASL)★Bring parents' documents and the birth certificate extract
Choose the family pediatrician★Do this through your local ASL as soon as possible

Within the First Month

Legal recognition of the child if parents are not married★Registry office
Update the household certificate (stato di famiglia)★Municipality registry office
Baby passport if international travel is plannedPolice headquarters
Update car insurance policy if the child is listed as dependentInsurance provider

Benefits and Allowances

Single and Universal Allowance (Assegno Unico)★Apply through INPS by June 30 of the birth year to receive back payments
